USA PEARS CHEER THE PACKERS TO VICTORY IN SUPERBOWL XLV

The growers of USA Pears offer Packer Backers recipes and décor tips featuring yellow and green pears to help celebrate Superbowl Sunday in style

PORTLAND, Ore. (January 27, 2011) – The 1,600 pear growers of Washington and Oregon (home to 84% of the U.S. fresh pear crop) are pleased to join in the fun of cheering the Green Bay Packers to victory in Superbowl XLV!

But why?  With two of the most abundant varieties of pears grown in these two states naturally coming in the official Packer colors (the yellow Bartlett pear and the green Anjou pear) there is an obvious reason to have an affinity for the Frozen Tundra over in pear country.  Plus, we all know that Pears and Cheese(heads) make for a perfect pair!  We’re pleased to present these festive and delicious ways fresh pears can be at the center of your game day spread.

The “Packer Backer” Centerpiece:

Alternately arrange yellow Bartlett pears and green Anjou pears in a tall, wide, clear glass vase for a simple yet festive centerpiece that adds drama (not to mention an easy-to-grab healthy snack option) to your traditional football-fan friendly snack table.

The Recipes:

Lambeau Leap Salsa with Pears and Mangoes

Ingredients:

⅔ cup green Anjou USA Pears, cored, cut into ¼-inch cubes

½ cup mango, peeled, pitted, cut into ¼-inch cubes

1 tablespoon minced white onion

1 tablespoon minced jalapeno pepper, seeded

1 tablespoon chopped cilantro

½ teaspoon salt

Preparation:

Mix all of the above ingredients until well combined, adding salt to taste.  Serve with yellow corn chips and The “Cheesehead” Pear Quesadilla.

The “Cheesehead” Pear Quesadilla

Ingredients:

1 12-inch flour tortilla

½ of a ripe yellow Bartlett USA Pear, cored and cut into ¼-inch slices

6 ¼-inch slices of Brie cheese

2 tablespoons shredded mild cheddar cheese

Preparation:

Heat oven to 425 degrees. Lay tortilla on a flat surface. Spread pear slices across half of the tortilla. Lay Brie across the top of the pear slices. Sprinkle mild cheddar over the Brie. Fold other half of the tortilla over the pear and cheese mixture. Transfer tortilla to a lightly greased or parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake until cheese melts and bubbles, about 3–5 minutes. Remove tortilla from oven, cool slightly, and cut into 6 wedges. Serve on a plate or platter with “Lambeau Leap Salsa with Pears and Mangoes” on the side.
